When left up to residents (as opposed to city staff), streets will almost always be designed with safety in mind. Private streets, such as those in trailer parks, usually feature traffic calming devices and lower speed limits. These should be a model for our public streets to follow. This photo comes from Provo’s Leisure Village mobile home park.

Today we want to publicly thank @provocity council member George Handley for all the good he does for our community. This is his bike which he rides everywhere. It sat outside city hall while he was working on our behalf from 1pm to 10pm. Thanks, George!

WE DID IT Last night, after receiving “an excessive number of emails in support”, @provocity Planning Commission approved the project plan for the @brighamyounguniversity Music Building without requiring them to build new parking. We’ve also put the pressure on Provo City to work with @rideuta and BYU on building the BYU Central UVX stop. The City’s Transportation and Mobility Advisory Committee and @mayorkaufusi Administration have begun to discuss it. Now we have to keep the pressure on. Thanks for all you do!

Haters will say it’s photoshopped, but here is a raised crosswalk in Orem. @universityplaceorem, Timpanogos Tech Center, @brighamyounguniversity , and @orem_city have installed raised crosswalks and speed bumps as ways to slow cars down and create a more pedestrian-friendly environment. Provo City Public Works says it cannot be done because of snow and plowing. Yet there are several local cases of it working very well. This is the kind of thing @provocity should install on Center Street to slow drivers down to the 15mph limit. @downtownprovo

Provo has the fourth highest share of people walking to work among cities with populations 100-200k. All the more important to design streets to keep our pedestrians safe!
